Forest Range Officer /Forest Ranger / Range Manager/ Range Wildlife Warden is an officer for a State Forest Service (SFS) in the Government of India. In some states, they also are referred to as a "Range Forest Officer." Forest Range Officer is a Gazette Officer. He or she wears a prescribed khaki uniform which has 3 three (Five pointed) stars on shoulder. FRO is an administrative officer. He or she is equivalent to Block Development Officer in the administrative domain and Sub-divisional Police Officer in policing. Forest Range Officers/Forest Rangers are also known as a Green Soldiers/GreenWarriors.

Our association for forest rangers is one of the largest in West Bengal. Our purpose as an organisation is to foster mutual understanding and a sense of brotherhood among all of the organization's members.

Training of a Forest Ranger

FRO/RFO/FRs are invariably trained in forestry and allied subjects in forest academies or forest rangers colleges established and administered by the Government of India or the State Government and very specialized in soil conservation, watershed management, logging management , mountaineering, wildlife management etc, as the case may be. The training course of Forest Range Officers is prescribed by the Government of India. The training duration is of 18 months (previously two year) which includes about 19 subjects related to forestry, Biodiversity etc. It also includes 6 months all India tour. It is a cerement of Forestry Education (DFE) runs 3 training institutes in Assam, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu for both ACF and FRO and one institution exclusively for FRO training in West Bengal. Many states also having their own institutions under the strict supervision of DFE.

Accountability of a Forest Ranger

Forest Rangers are the Backbone of the Department. The decreasing per capita forest area, burgeoning human and cattle population resulting in escalating demand for forest produces, open access to the forest resources and vastness of territorial jurisdiction have made FRO job challenging, complex in nature. Range Officer is an Administrator, Engineer, Range Wildlife Warden, Planters, Accountant, Land Officer, Welfare officer, Revenue Officer, Publicity officer, Law officer, Inspector of wood based Industries, Natural Resources Manager, Crime Investigating Officer, Implementer of different Government scheme, all in one. Forest range officers are responsible for the forests, environment and wildlife-related issues of a Forest Range within a state or union territory of India. He or she is responsible for the execution of all works in the Range, with the help of subordinates:
